Tottenham Riots – What Is Happening In The UK

Borrowed From BBC News, one of many shocking pictures of the riots

I arose this morning and turned on my TV to catch up with the weekend’s news, and am STILL watching in a state of total disbelief. What on earth gives some people the idea that they have the right to behave in such a reckless criminally dangerous manner. This to me is the disintegration of society in the UK, and sadly most likely the start of more incidents to follow.

From what I can piece together from the various sources of news, the events last night were started after the shooting by police of an “innocent” man on Thursday, this same “innocent” man was in the process of being arrested WHILST HE HIMSELF CARRIED A GUN. In my mind it really doesn’t matter who fired first, or indeed whose fault his death ultimately may prove to be, no normal law-abiding citizen goes about their business WITH A GUN on their person, and must surely have been expecting to use it ( any gun club will tell you NOT to load a gun unless you intend to use it). I cannot think of any ordinary day-to-day circumstance where the average person would feel the need to carry a gun (mind you, if these kind of events continue….who knows!)

Two whole days later, some more like-minded people decided to use this event as an excuse to go on a terrible rampage, burning homes and businesses, attacking the police whose only job is to protect the public, and looting their way through the ensuing chaos. If I was a betting person, I would place a LOT of money on the fact that those same hooliganistic people were NOT local to Tottenham, nor were they related in any way to the family of the man shot on Thursday. I would also bet that those hooligans have never done a real day’s work in their lives, and arrived in Tottenham with the selfish view that for a bit of chaos causing they could gain a few free televisions etc, having no concept of the damage they have caused in a LOT of people’s lives there and simply not caring about the harm they have inflicted, not to mention the deaths they must have caused but haven’t been discovered as yet. I will be amazed if no-one was actually killed in all that destruction.

My heart goes out to all those poor folks who have now lost everything, homes, possessions, and jobs, purely because of a few thugs with nothing better to do than ruin other people’s lives.

Also, we should have pride in our police force, the fire brigade, and the ambulance crews who all went over and above the call of mere duty to assist last night.

I have a few answers, from a non-political and average citizens point of view:

Let teachers discipline schoolchildren again when they need to be

Stop parents being able to sue schools and authorities when THEIR offspring have behaved in an unsociable manner and aforesaid authorities tried to put a stop to it.

Make any non-working people who CHOOSE to be as disruptive and unsocial as possible (with their drinking and drug dealing towards the  hard-working taxpayers who actually fund them,) do National Service, or community projects in order to receive their handouts.

Make the offence of carrying a gun, knife, OR an explosive device, (I include Molotov Cocktails in that category) a LOT more serious than it is currently. Carrying any of these in my eyes conveys intent to use them.

  1. Totally agree with you. However, this is a kind of reflection of the current society – whether you like it or not. This reflects frustration, lack of “willingness” to work as they can get an ‘easy’ way out, probably unemployment and an undercurrent of some divide within the society. I had stayed at Birmingham for 1.5 years till recently and I could feel this ‘tension’ every Friday – Saturday nights, when young drunkards look for ‘harassing’ foreigners in relatively empty streets, even threatening some people who refuse to give them a cigarette. The police needs to be absolutely tough and just eliminate this nuisance, which is threatening to bring a bad name to the entire nation. We don’t expect this from a developed nation like UK !

    • Exactly why we need to crack down and show those who exhibit unsocial behaviour, such as your “young drunkards” that we will simply not tolerate this anymore

WHEN WE GIVE A SENTENCE OF 10 YEARS, THEN LET IT BE 10. NOT 2 AND A BIT AND THE REST OFF FOR BEING GOOD.
IF THEY WERE GOOD IN THE FIRST PLACE THEY WOULDN’T BE THERE. BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY FOR SHOOTING POLICE OFFICERS AND THE LIKE.WE PAY THEM TO TAKE RISKS FOR US BUT DON’T BACK THEM UP AFTER THEY HAVE CAUGHT THE THUGS.
DON’T PAY PEOPLE NOT TO WORK, IF THEY ARE ABLE TO. LET THEM DO JOBS IN THE COMMUNITY. THAT WOULD SAVE A LOT OF THE TAX PAYERS MONEY AND MAKE THEM MORE LIKELY TO GO GET BETTER PAID WORK .THIS COUNTRY IS NOT A SHADOW OF ITS FORMER SELF, NOT WILL IT BE WHILST WE LET THE LUNATICS RUN THE ASSYLUM.
